A woman found dead on the Queen's Sandringham estate has been named
The body is that of Latvian Alisa Dmitrijeva, 17, from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk police said.
Her remains were spotted by a dog walker in woods on farmland near Anmer, about a mile from the main gate to Sandringham House.
Following forensic tests, police identified the victim, who went missing from her home in August.
Alisa's family said they were "devastated" at the news.
Detective Chief Inspector Jes Fry, senior investigating officer in the case, said: "Family Liaison Officers have been sent to meet with close family this morning to provide the update.

Global Economy Could Endure Disaster For a Week The global economy could withstand widespread disruption from a natural disaster or attack by militants for only a week as governments and businesses are not sufficiently prepared to deal with unexpected events, a report by a respected think-tank said.

In a statement from the Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, he expressed his condolences to the victim's families and friends.
"It was with a profound sense of both shock and disbelief that I learnt of the ballooning tragedy in the Wairarapa that claimed the lives of 11 people earlier today. A tragedy on this scale means many people, both in Carterton and elsewhere in New Zealand, will be grieving for those who died."
Local police have described the accident as "a tragedy as bad as tragedies get".
All of the hot air balloon's passengers - five couples and an experienced pilot - were killed in the fiery crash near Carterton.
Police said they received "around half a dozen calls from residents in the Somerset Road area reporting a hot air balloon in difficulty" around 7.30am.

He says he's an architect by training, but has been researching the history of native people in and around Georgia for years. On Examiner.com, he wrote about an 1,100-year-old archeological site near Georgia's highest mountain, Brasstown Bald, that he said "is possibly the site of the fabled city of Yupaha, which Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto failed to find in 1540."
This might all be fairly arcane stuff, except that an archeologist he cited, Mark Williams of the University of Georgia, took exception. In the comments section after Thornton's piece, he wrote, "I am the archaeologist Mark Williams mentioned in this article. This is total and complete bunk. There is no evidence of Maya in Georgia. Move along now."
Immediately the story exploded. In comments on Examiner, as well as on Facebook and in emails, users piled on. One woman called Williams "completely pompous and arrogant." A man wrote he was "completely disrespectful to the Public at large." Another said he would urge the state of Georgia to cut off funding for Williams' academic department at the university.

Police shoot and kill armed eighth-grader in Texas school, say he pointed gun at officers BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Officers summoned to a locked-down Texas middle school on Wednesday after a student was seen brandishing a handgun in the hallways shot and killed the eighth-grader after he ignored their order to drop the weapon and instead pointed it at them, police said.
The Cummings Middle School student, who police did not immediately identify but whose godmother identified him as 15-year-old Jaime Gonzalez, was spotted holding the weapon in the school at about 8 a.m., shortly first period classes began, district officials said. School administrators quickly called police and ordered the lockdown.
As teachers locked their classroom doors and turned off the lights, some frightened students climbed under their desks for comfort. They could hear police charge down the hallway and shout “put down the gun.” Then several shots, three of them, most students said.
The officers shot the boy after he pointed the gun at them, Brownsville police detective J.J. Trevino told The Associated Press. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Anaheim official urges record purge amid requests Anaheim, Orange County -- - An Anaheim official has urged employees to purge old documents from city files and threatened disciplinary action if they fail to do so amid a barrage of records requests.
Planning Department official Hannah Jones sent an e-mail last week telling employees that old documents that turn up in response to requests can "damage our credibility," the Voice of OC reported. The e-mail was sent after the nonprofit news agency filed a request for records of communications to and from City Council members.
Open government advocates raised questions about the ambiguous language of the e-mail and its intent. The e-mail laid out kinds of records that should be deleted including "e-mails and correspondence that simply confirm meeting dates, confirm shipping or receipt of information, or arranges meeting times."
"If they deleted documents covered by your request that are substantive e-mails that dealt with city business, that's problematic," Peter Scheer, executive director of the California First Amendment Coalition, told the news agency. "It's particularly problematic if it's in response to your request."

Confirmed: Fracking caused Ohio earthquakes Ohio lawmakers have put a temporary ban on fracking after experts say it is certain that recent fracking in the Buckeye State caused an outbreak of earthquakes.
According to some seismologists, hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is to blame for a string of tremors in Ohio, including a 4.0-magnitude quake on New Year’s Eve. It has long been suggested that fracking, which involves deep-earth drilling to extract gas for natural resource reserves, has been culpable for quakes. In the fracking process, wastewater collected during the deep drilling is injected back into the Earth for disposal. Thought to be safe by some, other experts insist that the brine water could find its way into subterranean faults and force parts of the planet to separate. The Youngstown, OH area has seen 11 small quakes since last spring, and now a moratorium has been instated in the area to keep future fracking from occurring while seismologists reinvestigate the quakes.
Even with a stay in place, however, experts say the quakes won’t be stopping anytime soon.
"The earthquakes will trickle on as a kind of a cascading process once you've caused them to occur," John Armbruster of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory tells the Associated Press. "This one year of pumping is a pulse that has been pushed into the ground, and it's going to be spreading out for at least a year."

Iran warns U.S. aircraft carrier to stay out of the Gulf Iran will take action if a U.S. aircraft carrier which left the area because of Iranian naval exercises returns to the Gulf, the state news agency quoted army chief Ataollah Salehi as saying on Tuesday.
"Iran will not repeat its warning ... the enemy's carrier has been moved to the Sea of Oman because of our drill. I recommend and emphasize to the American carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf," Salehi told IRNA.
"I advise, recommend and warn them (the Americans) over the return of this carrier to the Persian Gulf because we are not in the habit of warning more than once," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Salehi as saying.
Salehi did not name the aircraft carrier or give details of the action Iran might take if it returned. However, last week a spokeswoman for the U.S. 5th Fleet said the USS John C. Stennis had left the Gulf.

In their annual New Year's forecast, the priests warned the world could see more earthquakes and increased global warming, and they cautioned that people should also be vigilant against matrimonial discord.
That may not be a very cheery message, but it's a lot better than the fire-and-brimstone prophecies that that some have attributed to the Maya, whose calendar cycle ends on Dec. 21, 2012. The priests say they see a spiritual end to old things, but not a physical end to the planet.

All visitors evacuated from Rainier; gunman sought MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. (AP) — About 125 people were evacuated overnight from the visitors center at Mount Rainier National Park as authorities searched the snowy terrain for an armed gunman suspected of killing a park ranger.
About 150 officers converged on the mountain park after ranger Margaret Anderson was shot to death Sunday morning, and searchers used an aircraft with heat-sensing capabilities to hunt from the skies.
Authorities believe the gunman was still in the woods, with weapons.
Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said that Benjamin Colton Barnes, a 24-year-old believed to have survivalist skills, was a "strong person of interest" in the slaying.
"We do have a very hot and dangerous situation," Troyer said.

Police in Beebe said dozens of blackbirds had fallen dead, prompting officers to ban residents from shooting fireworks Saturday night. It wasn't immediately clear if fireworks were again to blame, but authorities weren't taking a chance.
Officer John Weeks said the first reports of "birds on the streets" came around 7 p.m. as residents celebrated the year's end with fireworks in their neighborhoods.
"We started shutting down fireworks," he said. "We're working on cleaning up the birds now."

When the tides and winds combine to churn dead algal matter up from the bottom of the sea, it produces this foam, which is quite dramatic,” the spokeswoman said. Officers visited Cleveleys on Wednesday and again on Thursday to collect more specimens to analyze. The results of the tests are expected to confirm the foam is natural and not caused by detergent in seawater or other pollution. By studying the foam, the agency hopes to learn how and why it forms and so predict when the froth will return. “If we can understand what conditions cause it, that will help us predict it and help local authorities involved in the cleanup operations,” the spokeswoman said.

A rare and massive dust storm closes interstate in Idaho SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A dust storm churned by winds of up to 50 miles per hour forced a 20-mile closure of an interstate in Idaho on Thursday, and highway officials scrambled to divert thousands of motorists near Idaho Falls.
Dirt blowing off cropland drastically reduced visibility for much of the day along a portion of Interstate 15, the north-south route that runs from California to Montana and intersects Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
The early morning closure ordered by the Idaho Transportation Department was expected to extend into the evening hours and go into effect again on Friday night, when a second Pacific storm front was forecast to unleash high winds.
State highway officials said it was rare for a storm this time of year to sweep large clouds of dirt across the Upper Snake River Plain in the high desert of eastern Idaho.
"This may be the first time we have ever closed the interstate for a dust storm in December," spokesman Bruce King said.

Aliens invade U.S. waters (and they look like massive shrimp) Being from Louisiana, the term "jumbo shrimp" usually indicates a positive (and tasty) thing. Those suckers are usually three inches long at most. That's gargantuan, even. Now, a foot-long shrimp species that look like they came from another planet has invaded the Gulf, bringing with it an insatiable hunger and a load of disease.
Known as Asian tiger prawns, thus far only five have been found in the Gulf, but that's five more than should be there, and there have been a flurry of sightings. The species is from the western Pacific and can grow up to 13 inches long and half a pound. Marine scientists are conducting genetic studies to determine their origins, but it is thought there may have been an accidental release of farmed Asian tiger prawns in South Carolina.
The environmental impact of these prawns is unknown, but bringing a foreign species into the Gulf, especially one with such a larger appetite than those who call it home, can knock the natural ecosystem off balance.
Not to mention the prawns are a known carrier of at least 16 viruses, ones that can be lethal to shrimp and fish, which would do more than just throw the Gulf's ecosystem off balance: it could throw the Gulf Coast's economy off balance.

Volcano Eruption in Yemen The Red Sea has a new inhabitant: a smoking island.
The island was created by a wild eruption that occurred in the Red Sea earlier this month. It is made of loose volcanic debris from the eruption, so it may not stick around long.
According to news reports, fishermen witnessed lava fountains reaching up to 90 feet (30 meters) tall on Dec. 19, which is probably the day the eruption began, said Erik Klemetti, a volcanologist at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
Ash plumes were seen emanating from the spot Dec. 20 and Dec. 22 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS, on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites. The Ozone Monitoring Instrument on NASA's Aura satellite detected elevated levels of sulfur dioxide, further indicating an eruption. By Dec. 23, what looked like a new island had appeared in the Red Sea off the west coast of Yemen.
"I am surprised about how quickly the island has grown," Klemetti, who writes Wired's Eruptions Blog, told OurAmazingPlanet.
The volcanic activity occurred along the Zubair Group, a collection of small islands that run in a roughly northwest-southeast line. The islands rise from a shield volcano (a kind of volcano built from fluid lava flows) and poke above the sea surface.

One Dead After Early Morning Tanker Explosion Closes I-95 in Daytona, Florida Daytona Beach, FL- The northbound lanes of I-95 remain closed after a fiery crash around 3:45 this morning. FHP confirms the accident involved three semi-trucks and a passenger car including a tanker truck carrying the hazardous material bromine, a logging truck, and a US Mail truck. NB traffic is being diverted onto SR 44.
The FHP report states that the log truck overturned on I-95, spilling its cargo, causing the car to crash into the timber. The mail truck then rear-ended the car, followed by the hazardous material truck striking the US Mail truck from behind.
The Volusia County Sheriffs Offfice has confirmed one fatality from the hazardous materials truck- five people were taken to Halifax Medical Center, ranging from just minor injuries to being listed in serious condition. None of those 5 appear to have sustained anything life-threatening.

Strange Sounds Heard In Illinois
