Sanity and certainty are apt to continue in short supply for financial markets this week. Darkest exoplanet spotted by astronomers A dark alien world, blacker than coal, has been spotted by astronomers.
The Jupiter-sized planet is orbiting its star at a distance of just five million km, and is likely to be at a temperature of some 1200C.
The planet may be too hot to support reflective clouds like those we see in our own Solar System, but even that would not explain why it is so dark.
The planet, called TrES-2b, is so named because it was first spotted by the Trans-Atlantic Exoplanet Survey in 2006. It is about 750 light-years away, in the Draco constellation.

Bend breakthrough sends light around a corner (PhysOrg.com) -- Australian National University scientists have successfully bent light beams around an object on a two dimensional metal surface, opening the door to faster and cheaper computer chips working with light.
The international team, including three members from the Research School of Physics and Engineering at ANU, have successfully demonstrated that a tiny beam of light on a flat surface can be bent around an obstacle, and course-correct itself on the other side of that obstacle. It’s the world’s first two-dimensional demonstration of so-called ‘Airy beams’. Their paper on the subject will be published in this month’s Physical Review Letters.
“Students in science class learn that light rays travel along straight trajectories and that it can’t go around corners,” said ANU team member Professor Yuri Kivshar.
“Recently it was discovered that small beams of light can be bent in a laboratory setting, diffracting much less than a regular beam. These rays of light are called ‘Airy Beams,’ and named after the English astronomer Sir George Biddell Airy, who studied light in rainbows.

Appeals Court Rules Portion of Obama Health Care Bill Unconstitutional A federal appeals court in Atlanta on Friday struck down a key provision of the Obama administration's health care reform law, ruling that Congress exceeded its authority in mandating that most Americans buy health insurance by 2014 or face a penalty.
A divided, three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the individual mandate was "breathtaking in its expansive scope" and therefore unconstitutional. The "individual mandate," they wrote, "exceeds Congress's enumerated commerce power."

The flying prototype, called the Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2), plunged into the ocean after shifting into a mode that allows it to fly Mach 20, or about 13,000 mph, according to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which oversaw the test flight.
The rocket-launched vehicle is part of an advanced weapons program, called Conventional Prompt Global Strike, which is working to develop systems of reaching an enemy target anywhere in the world within one hour. The prosecutor would have none of it.
"In essence, Mr. Ciavarella’s argument is, ’I was not selling kids retail,’ " Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon A.D. Zubrod said. "We agree with that. He was selling them wholesale."
Minutes later, U.S. District Judge Edwin M. Kosik slammed Ciavarella, 61, with 28 years in prison. It appeared to be the longest federal prison sentence ever given in a U.S. political corruption case.

Yellowtail moth invasion leads to curfew in French Guiana August 11, 2011 – Cayenne, French Guiana (AFP) – An invasion of Yellowtail moths that cause a form of dermatitis known as the Caripito itch has led the authorities in a region of French Guiana to impose a nighttime curfew. The affected region is Sinnamary, located 110 kilometres (68 miles) west of the French overseas territory’s capital Cayenne.
Since the start of July, public lighting has been switched off at dusk, shops closed and residents told to stay indoors, in the dark and under mosquito nets, the authorities said. The Yellowtail moth — Hylesia Metabus — is found mainly in mangrove swamps but they swarm to lights in nearby towns between 7:00 pm and 11:00 pm.
“The female moths release thousands of microscopic urticating hairs that cause severe itching,” the local health authority said. The hairs used by the female moths to protect their eggs from predators can cause cutaneous conditions in humans. “The light produced by a television set is enough to draw the moths into homes,” Barbara Thomas, a local restaurant owner, told AFP. “I’ve been closed every evening for a month now,” she said, complaining that the infestation had hit French Guiana’s economy badly at the peak of the tourist season. At the nearby international space centre in Kourou, the base used to launch Russian Soyouz rockets has set up light traps to fight the swarming moths, local engineer Claude Berteaud said. Sinnamary residents staged a march on July 29 to demand the authorities eradicate the moths. A committee was formed to tackle the problem and consider measures such as spraying the swamps during the moths’ reproductive period. –

According to a report from TEPCO given to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, TEPCO hired many of the workers through subcontractors from all over Japan for limited periods and kept no records of their addresses. On any given day, TEPCO said it has had up to 1,000 workers on rotating schedules at the stricken power plant.
Asahi Geino reported in May that subcontractors were hiring day laborers to work at the plant. The daily remuneration was three times that of regular day jobs if within the grounds of the reactor complex, and 1.5 times higher if within the wider area now restricted due to high radioactivity.
While safety measures are in place to keep workers’ daily exposure to radiation within safe levels, claims for compensation due to sickness from overexposure are unlikely to be paid out, the magazine reported.

Animal's genetic code redesigned Researchers say they have created the first ever animal with artificial information in its genetic code.
The technique, they say, could give biologists "atom-by-atom control" over the molecules in living organisms.

DHS Funds Real-time Spy Cams on SF Buses The Department of Homeland Security will fund an effort by San Francisco to install real-time video cameras on 358 city buses, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The existing system, installed a decade ago, stores footage on tape located on each vehicle.
The new surveillance system will use a wireless network “that will enable SFMTA personnel to view, download and store the captured video images wirelessly and view them in real-time or through the Internet.”
According to city documents, “the new system will provide real-time viewing of images, inside and outside the bus, by law enforcement officers, emergency responders and other authorized personnel on a real-time basis from a distance of about 500 yards in case the bus is hijacked and used for terrorism activities.”

Nurseryman Nigel Hewitt-Cooper, from West Pennard, was inspecting his tropical garden when he discovered one of his pitcher plants had trapped the bird.
He said he was "absolutely staggered" to find it had caught the creature.

Helicopter Crash in Afghanistan Reportedly Kills Members of SEAL Team 6 (same unit involved in Osama bin Laden's death ) KABUL, Afghanistan -- Insurgents shot down a U.S. military helicopter during fighting in eastern Afghanistan, killing 30 Americans, most of them belonging to the same elite unit as the Navy SEALs who killed Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden, U.S. officials said Saturday. It was the deadliest single loss for American forces in the decade-old war against the Taliban.
One current and one former U.S. official said that the dead included 25 Navy SEALs from SEAL Team Six, the unit that carried out the raid in Pakistan in May that killed bin Laden. They were being flown by a crew of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because families are still being notified.
A total number of 38 people died in the crash, killing 7 Afghans and one interpreter.
None of those killed in the crash is believed to have been part of the SEALs mission that killed bin Laden, but they were from the same unit as the bin Laden team.
"We don't believe that any of the special operators who were killed were involved in the bin Laden operation," a senior U.S. military official told Fox News.

S&P downgrades U.S. debt for first time in history WASHINGTON --The United States has lost its coveted top AAA credit rating. Credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s on Friday downgraded the nation’s rating for the first time since the U.S. won the top ranking in 1917. The move came after Congress haggled over budget cuts and the nation’s borrowing limit — and failed to cut enough government spending to satisfy S&P. The issue has contributed to convulsions in financial markets.
The drop in the rating by one notch to AA-plus was expected. The three main credit agencies, which also include Moody’s Investor Service and Fitch, had warned during the budget fight that if Congress did not cut spending far enough, the country faced a downgrade. S&P said that it is making the move because the deficit reduction plan passed by Congress on Tuesday did not go far enough to stabilize the country’s debt situation. Moody’s said Friday it was keeping its AAA rating on the nation’s debt, but that it might still lower it.

Police rescue woman, child from German pig swarm BERLIN—Police in northern Germany say they rescued a woman and her 2-year-old child whose car was swarmed — by a herd of pigs.
Police said the woman called them Friday afternoon from outside the tiny village of Wanderup, near the Danish border. She said “20 relatively large hip-high pigs” had surrounded her VW Golf after she had driven off the road into a field.
She told them they had formed such a tight circle and were behaving so aggressively that she couldn’t flee the car.
Police say they were able to free the woman and her child without incident.

America's 10 Sickest Housing Markets For three years, the real estate market has been going in one direction — primarily down. Some areas, however, have begun to recover. Recent S&P/Case-Shiller data show that among the top 20 housing markets in the U.S., 18 had very modest improvements in sales prices during May. Others, like Washington and Boston, have began to at least stabilize from a year ago.
Few markets, however, can match Washington and Boston. Robert Shiller has been stating that home prices could fall another 10% in the next year. Inventories in some major metropolitan areas would take years of sales to get back to 2005 levels. Then, the normal inventory of homes for sale was replaced on average every six months and it was unusual for a house to be on the market for a year. Foreclosure rates remain high and only the robo-signing scandal has slowed the process. Once this is resolved, economists fear the market will be flooded with even more vacant, unsold homes.

These are markets where demand has clearly collapsed. These are cities where the requirement for living space has dropped well below the national average. Further, vacancy rates of many cities were stable during the recession, but accelerated sharply higher in the last year. Similarly, housing prices in several of these markets have decreased at a faster rate in the last three quarters than during the recession. These cities, like Detroit, St. Louis, Dayton, and Atlanta, also tend to be larger and older among the top 75 metropolitan areas. Their economies were damaged long before the recession.

The formation is particularly clear at 1min 35secs.
YouTube users have already been saying who they think the face resembles. Suggested personalities include former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, Buddha, actor Chuck Norris, and even Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter series.
The video was taken shortly before a thunderstorm occured in the region, located in southeast Canada.
