Though the strength of Chile’s earthquake was more powerful than the quake that devastated the nation of Haiti, the loss of life has been considerably less. Europe braces for destructive weekend winter storm A large but disorganized extratropical storm located over the middle-Atlantic Ocean is expected to move rapidly eastwards towards Spain over the next two days. As the storm approaches Spain on Friday, it is expected to tap into a cold polar airmass to its north and rapidly intensify into a meteorological "bomb"--a mighty winter cyclone with hurricane force winds. Though sea surface temperatures off the coast of Spain are about 1°C below average, the waters of 12 - 16°C will provide plenty of moisture and energy to the powerful storm, which may end up rivaling last year's Winter Storm Klaus in intensity. Klaus, which hit northern Spain and southwest France January 23 - 25, was Earth's most costly natural disaster of 2009, causing $5.1 billion in damage and killing 26. Klaus peaked in intensity at 967 mb, and brought wind gusts of 120 mph (193 km/hr) to Formiguères, France, 125 mph (200 km/hr) to Portbou, Spain, and 134 mph (216 km/hr) to Port d'Envalira, Andorra.

Here we go again... could this be the finale of storms for the season? All I can say is I am impressed for what could be the worst storm of the winter season. Why? In this case, the storm comes north and bombs out over New York City and eventually does a loop over northeastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. During the bombing-out process, winds will really kick in with gusts up to 60 mph, if not greater, across eastern Pennsylvania into Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. In addition, the temperatures will be falling, and heavy snow will develop. In many areas, this will be a long-duration snow lasting for a couple of days, especially over the Laurel Highlands.
Here's the kicker... eastern Maine and eastern New England could have heavy rain and high winds, while Philly, Harrisburg, Allentown, Scranton and Binghamton have an all-out blizzard.

Five dead, dozens buried in Indonesia landslide JAKARTA — Five people were killed and more than 30 remain missing after a landslide buried part of a tea plantation in Indonesia on Tuesday, an official said.
The landslide struck after heavy rains in flood-ravaged Bandung district south of the capital Jakarta, he said.
"Five bodies have been pulled out. Thirty-five people are still missing. About 35 houses were buried so deep even the rooftops weren't visible," Jakarta search and rescue head Budiawan told AFP.

Southern California braces for pair of wet, windy storms LOS ANGELES (AP) — A storm system rolling into Southern California is expected to bring rain, snow and winds starting Friday. More than an inch of rain is forecast in the Angeles National Forest burn areas.
The National Weather Service says rain is expected to develop over San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties and move into Ventura and Los Angeles counties by Friday night.
The storm has been strengthening and thunderstorms are likely, raising concerns of mudslides in areas affected by last year's Station wildfire.

Florida Snow Could Mean Snow In All 50 States At Once (Norman, OK) -- There could be snow on the ground in all 50 states simultaneously by the end of the week in what would be a weather oddity.
KOTV reports Patrick Marsh, a student employee at the NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma, is currently trying to collect photos of snow on the ground in all 50 states.
Marsh says Florida is the only state without snow on the ground at this point, but he said two to four inches of snow is forecast today in some parts of the state.

A Rare Earthquake Hits Near Chicago CHICAGO — A small pre-dawn earthquake has hit northern Illinois, startling sleepy-eyed residents as far away as Iowa and Indiana, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported.

Kashmir avalanche kills Indian troops A huge avalanche engulfed part of an army training centre in Indian-controlled Kashmir today, killing 17 soldiers and seriously injuring 17 others.
The avalanche hit the Indian army's High Altitude Warfare School at about 11am (0530 GMT) as soldiers took part in a training session, according to army spokesman Colonel Vineet Sood. It was the worst avalanche in the area in many years, he said.
Seventeen bodies were found and 53 soldiers were rescued about six hours after the avalanche struck, senior police officer Qayoom Manhas said. Of those rescued, 17 needed emergency medical care, he added.

Washington (CNN) -- Close to 20 inches of snow piled up at the nation's capital as a blizzard pounded mid-Atlantic states Saturday, cutting power to hundreds of thousands in the region in what the president referred to as "Snowmaggedon."
Snow was falling from southern Indiana eastward to New York City, Washington, Pennsylvania, Delaware and the New Jersey coast.
The blizzard has left hundreds of thousands of customers from Virginia to Pennsylvania without power, utility companies said. As of 12 p.m., Dominion Virginia Power had restored electricity to 101,000 of 207,000 customers who were without power Saturday morning, the company said.
In Maryland and Washington, more than 104,000 Pepco customers were in the dark, the utility company said. The majority, or 81,324, live in Montgomery County, Maryland, and 9,587 live in Washington, according to Pepco

Coastguards filmed the eruption, recording that the smoke reached 100 metres in the air, turning the surrounding ocean a yellow-green colour.

Just in case you forgot about Yellowstone, Scientists on Alert After Hundreds of Earthquakes Daily Rattle Yellowstone National Park Over the course of the past two weeks, more than one-hundred mostly small earthquakes per day, on average, have shaken up a remote area of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Researchers say that for the time being, the earthquake cluster is more of a cause of curiosity than alarm.
The earthquake zone is located about 10 miles northwest of the Old Faithful geyser, and is far from any road or community. The park is also relatively empty during the winter months. The swarms of earthquakes are relatively common, and a significant swarm was experienced there last year as well. Researchers say that it has shown little indication that it will build towards a larger event, such as a volcanic eruption that destroyed the Yellowstone region tens of thousands of years ago.
Scientists say that the current Yellowstone swarm does at least bear close observation due to its volume. As of Sunday, January 31, 2009, there had been 1,608 earthquakes at the park since January 17.

It's simple, the pediatrician answered: Newborn babies in the United States are routinely screened for a panel of genetic diseases. Since the testing is mandated by the government, it's often done without the parents' consent, according to Brad Therrell, director of the National Newborn Screening & Genetics Resource Center.

Geithner, Bernanke Locked in Death Spiral January 24, 2010 (LPAC)—The bad news just seems to be getting worse for both Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. The House Oversight Committee has now received 250,000 pages of documents from the Fed regarding its role in the bailout of AIG. According to the New York Times, which was leaked some of the documents and Congressional committee staff notes, they prove that Geithner was involved, up to his neck, in the decision to pay AIG's trading partners 100 cents on the dollar for their contracts. The Times reports that Thomas C. Baxter, the chief counsel of the New York Federal Reserve Bank, some at the Fed wanted to discount the contracts, but the banks refused. "We asked for concessions, and they said no," Baxter told Congressional investigators. He also told them that it was Geithner who verbally approved the decision to pay full price to the banks.
Where Bernanke came down on this deal is not reported, but nonetheless, his nomination remains in trouble. Speculation in the media has now turned to who might succeed Bernanke if the Senate rejects him, with Politico focusing on Fed Vice Chairman Donald Kohn, who is likely to become acting chairman if Bernanke is not reconfirmed by Jan. 31. Bernanke's nomination was reported out of the Senate Banking Committee by a 16-7 vote, with Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) joining six Republicans in opposition. A tabulation by The Hill, Jan. 22, counts 25 Senators supporting Bernanke and 13 opposed, with the remainder undecided or unknown.

The experiment, financed by the U.S. Defense Department, is a joint project with the University of Hawaii and is part of a scientific project intended to improve seismological and acoustic readings in Israel and its environs, up to a 1,000 km/621 mile radius.
The experiment intends to improve the understanding of sound waves in the atmosphere. Scientists will then be able to fine-tune Israel’s seismological equipment to give advance warning of earthquakes. Measurements will also be taken in other countries, including Cyprus, Greece, France, and Germany.

Skull and crossbones removed from auction NEW YORK, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A human skull and crossbones once used as a ballot box by a secret society at Yale University will not be auctioned as planned, a New York auction house said.
Christie's auction house confirmed in a statement the human remains once used by the secret Order of Skull and Bones at Yale University were removed from Friday's auction due to a claim on the rights to the remains, CNN said.
The sale was previously opposed by the World Archaeological Congress, which labeled it an "affront to human dignity."
