Mars is retrograde now (January 24-April 14), so matters could get tricky here. Byron Nuclear Reactor Loses Power, Venting Steam Byron, Ill. - A nuclear power plant in Byron, Ill., lost power and shut down on Monday afternoon in an incident officials called "an unusual event."
Officials said small amounts of radiation called tritium were in the steam that was released to help cool the plant, which is northwest of Chicago. Tritium is a radioactive variation of hydrogen. Exelon said the levels were low and not a danger to the community.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's "incident response center" in Lisle was activated immediately after that agency learned the transformer in the electrical switching yard at Byron began smoking during the emergency shutdown of reactor two. The unit is still offline tonight.
On Monday night, engineers, a physicist and a team manager were still there, monitoring real time information about the temperature pressure inside that reactor.

According to NPR/ProPublica's review of public documents, Freddie Mac invested in securities called "inverse floaters," which receive all the interest payments from specified mortgage-backed securities. "If lots of people 'pre-pay' their old loans and refinance into new, cheaper ones, then Freddie Mac starts to lose money," ProPublica's Jesse Eisinger and NPR's Chris Arnold explain. "If people can't refinance, then Freddie wins because it continues to receive that flow of older, higher interest payments."
Although Freddie Mac's bets are legal, they're highly offensive. Rightly or not, many Americans blame Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae -- which was not mentioned in the NPR/ProPublica report -- for the housing boom and subsequent bust. Pentagon Unable to Account for Missing Iraqi Millions The Pentagon doesn’t know what happened to more than $100 million in cash held at Saddam Hussein’s palace in Baghdad during the Iraq war, according to a new report by the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction.
What’s more, the Pentagon can’t find documents to explain what it spent as much as $1.7 billion on from funds held on behalf of the Iraqi government by the New York Federal Reserve, the report says.
The missing records raise new questions about how the US government handled billions of dollars in Iraqi funds during the war.
The new report, the latest in a multi-year investigation by the inspector general into missing money in Iraq, paints a picture of Pentagon officials digging through boxes of hard copy records looking for missing paper copies of Excel spreadsheets, monthly reports and other paper documents that should have been kept detailing what the money was spent on and why those expenditures were necessary. Apparently, there are no electronic records to back up the spending.

Why does the military seem to be preparing for urban warfare in the United States? Recently, I published an article covering the January 22-26 multi-agency exercises being conducted in the Los Angeles area.
As I outlined in the article, this is in fact part of a broader trend of joint military-police drills (which often include other agencies, hence the “multi-agency” label) that have been occurring across the United States.
It seems hard to ignore the fact that the armed forces of the United States are training for urban warfare, not urban warfare in the Middle East, but instead here in our own nation.
This is becoming painfully clear due to the fact that the military trains for what they think they’re going to do.
If they are planning to fight in the desert, they would train in the desert and obviously if they are going to be fighting in a metropolitan setting in the United States, they would train in an American city.
Unfortunately, this is exactly what we are witnessing: increasing amount of training in urban American environments.
The Los Angeles drill is just a microcosmic example of this, and one of the more disturbing developments is the announcement of a “mock city roughly the size of downtown San Diego” which has been erected recently at the Twentynine Palms military base.

But space weather – variable conditions in the space surrounding Earth – has important consequences for our lives inside Earth’s atmosphere.
Solar activity occurring miles outside Earth’s atmosphere, for example, can trigger magnetic storms on Earth. These storms are visually stunning, but they can set our modern infrastructure spinning.
On Jan. 19, scientists saw a solar flare in an active region of the Sun, along with a concentrated blast of solar-wind plasma and magnetic field lines known as a coronal mass ejection that burst from the Sun’s surface and appeared to be headed for Earth.
When these solar winds met Earth’s magnetic field, the interaction created one of the largest magnetic storms on Earth recorded in the past few years. The storm peaked on Jan. 24, just as another storm began.
“These new storms, and the storm we witnessed on Sept 26, 2011, indicate the up-tick in activity coming with the Earth’s ascent into the next solar maximum,” said USGS geophysicist Jeffrey Love.” This solar maximum is the period of greatest activity in the solar cycle of the Sun, and it is predicted to occur sometime in end of 2012 - 2013, which will increase the amount of magnetic storms on Earth.
Magnetic storms, said Love, are a space weather phenomenon responsible for the breathtaking lights of the aurora borealis, but also sometimes for the disruption of technology and infrastructure our modern society depends on. Large magnetic storms, for example, can interrupt radio communication, interfere with global-positioning systems, disrupt oil and gas well drilling, damage satellites and affect their operations, and even cause electrical blackouts by inducing voltage surges in electric power grids.

Smoke Leads to Deadly Accident on I-75 GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A long line of cars and trucks collided one after another early Sunday on a dark Florida highway so shrouded in haze and smoke that drivers were instantly blinded. At least 10 people were killed.
When rescuers first arrived, they could only listen for screams and moans because the poor visibility made it difficult to find victims in wreckage that was strewn for nearly a mile, police said.
Authorities were still trying to determine what caused the pileup south of Gainesville on Interstate 75, which had been closed for a time before the accidents because of the mixture of fog and heavy smoke from a brush fire that may have been intentionally set. 300 arrested in daylong Occupy Oakland protests OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Dozens of police maintained a late-night guard around City Hall following daylong protests that resulted in 300 arrests. Occupy Oakland demonstrators broke into the historic building and burned a U.S. flag, as officers earlier fired tear gas to disperse people throwing rocks and tearing down fencing at a convention center.
Saturday's protests — the most turbulent since Oakland police forcefully dismantled an Occupy encampment in November — came just days after the group said it planned to use a vacant building as a social center and political hub and threatened to try to shut down the port, occupy the airport and take over City Hall.
An exasperated Mayor Jean Quan, who faced heavy criticism for the police action last fall, called on the Occupy movement to "stop using Oakland as its playground."

Arctic snowy owls soar south in rare mass move SALMON, Idaho — Bird enthusiasts are reporting rising numbers of snowy owls from the Arctic winging into the lower 48 states this winter in a mass southern migration that a leading owl researcher called "unbelievable."
Thousands of the snow-white birds, which stand 2 feet tall with 5-foot wingspans, have been spotted from coast to coast, feeding in farmlands in Idaho, roosting on rooftops in Montana, gliding over golf courses in Missouri and soaring over shorelines in Massachusetts.
A certain number of the iconic owls fly south from their Arctic breeding grounds each winter but rarely do so many venture so far away even amid large-scale, periodic southern migrations known as irruptions.
"What we're seeing now — it's unbelievable," said Denver Holt, head of the Owl Research Institute in Montana.
"This is the most significant wildlife event in decades," added Holt, who has studied snowy owls in their Arctic tundra ecosystem for two decades.
Holt and other owl experts say the phenomenon is likely linked to lemmings, a rodent that accounts for 90 percent of the diet of snowy owls during breeding months that stretch from May into September. The largely nocturnal birds also prey on a host of other animals, from voles to geese.

Giant Veil of "Cold Plasma" Discovered High Above Earth Clouds of "cold plasma" reach from the top of Earth's atmosphere to at least a quarter the distance to the moon, according to new data from a cluster of European satellites.
Earth generates cold plasma—slow-moving charged particles—at the edge of space, where sunlight strips electrons from gas atoms, leaving only their positively charged cores, or nuclei.
(Find out how cold plasma might also help explain why Mars is missing its atmosphere.)
Researchers had suspected these hard-to-detect particles might influence incoming space weather, such as this week's solar flare and resulting geomagnetic storm. That's because solar storms barrage Earth with similar but high-speed charged particles.
Still, no one could be certain what the effects of cold plasma might be without a handle on its true abundance around our planet.

As of this post there have been five C class flares recorded by GOES today from Sunspot Regions 1401, 1402, and 1409. The largest of these flares was a C5.5 Solar Flare from Sunspot Region 1402 at 06:24 UTC. There was a CME eruption from the SW region of the disk that is seen beginning to eject on SOHO LC2 at approximatley 05:12 UTC. This CME was ejected from near a new Sunspot Region that was developing before it rotated off of the Earth facing side of the disk, and has not yet been numbered.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) published the first study yesterday. Tests to measure activity in the brain were done on a group of 30 volunteers, who had psilocybin mixed into their bloodstream while having MRI scans (magnetic resonance imaging). The volunteers were separated into two equal groups, each one studied using a different type of functional MRI (fMRI) scanner. The MRIs showed that instead of increasing brain activity as was previously assumed, activity actually fell in certain highly connected areas of the brain, or brain 'hubs'.

New Zealand whale stranding kills 36, threatens 40 WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A mass-stranding of whales on a New Zealand beach has left 36 of the creatures dead and threatens 40 more.
Department of Conservation area manager John Mason said 99 pilot whales stranded themselves Monday on Farewell Spit on the South Island. By Tuesday, 36 whales had died and another 40 remained stranded and were still in danger.
Mason said conservation staff and volunteers had successfully refloated 17 whales, which had swum out to deeper water. Another six whales remained unaccounted for.
The 40 beached whales were briefly swimming in shallow water early Tuesday afternoon but became stranded again by the evening as the tide went out. Mason said volunteers would try to keep the whales cool and wet until dark. He said after that, all they could hope for was that the whales would swim away on the next high tide during the night

Rand Paul Detained By TSA Over Pat-Down Standoff Sen. Rand Paul told his communications director this morning he was being detained by TSA at the Nashville airport.
The Twitter account associated with Paul staffer Moira Bagley, @moirabagley, tweeted around 10 a.m., ET, “Just got a call from @senrandpaul. He’s currently being detained by TSA in Nashville.”
A TSA spokesman disputed that Paul was ever “detained.” But he was not granted access to the secure area of the airport when he tried to board a flight Monday morning.
The standoff was short-lived. By late morning, according to TSA, Paul had been booked on another flight and made it through the screening process.
The TSA version of events is that Paul triggered an alarm during routine airport screening and refused to complete the screening process (pat-down) in order to resolve the issue. Paul was escorted out of the screening area by local law enforcement.
“When an irregularity is found during the TSA screening process, it must be resolved prior to allowing a passenger to proceed to the secure area of the airport,” according to an official statement released by TSA. “Passengers who refuse to complete the screening process cannot be granted access to the secure area in order to ensure the safety of others traveling.”
Paul’s office confirmed he set off an airport security full-body scanner “on a glitch,” according to a spokesman.

Indonesian Atheist Attacked, Faces Jail Time After Posting 'God Doesn't Exist' On Facebook After surviving an attack from an angry mob, an Indonesian atheist is facing jail time for posting the phrase "God doesn't exist" on his Facebook page.
The man, who is being identified only as Alexander, posted the message on the social networking site and was later reported to authorities by the Indonesian Council of Ulema, an Islamic religious authority, according to the Telegraph.
Alexander arrived for work at a government office Wednesday, where he was met and attacked by a mob of people upset by his beliefs.
He was arrested on Friday and charged with blasphemy against Islam, a crime punishable by up to five years in jail.
According to the Telegraph, officials were upset because they "believed Mr. Alexander had defiled Islam by using passages from the Koran to denounce God."
An Indonesian law prohibits people from speaking out against any of the country's six recognized religions.
In addition to legal trouble, Alexander's post may also cost him his job, the BBC reports.
Alexander grew up Muslim, but questioned the existence of God, angels and heaven, the Jakarta Post reports. He learned about atheism while attending college in Bandung, West Java.
