Just in case you forgot about Yellowstone, Scientists on Alert After Hundreds of Earthquakes Daily Rattle Yellowstone National Park Over the course of the past two weeks, more than one-hundred mostly small earthquakes per day, on average, have shaken up a remote area of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Researchers say that for the time being, the earthquake cluster is more of a cause of curiosity than alarm. The earthquake zone is located about 10 miles northwest of the Old Faithful geyser, and is far from any road or community. The park is also relatively empty during the winter months. The swarms of earthquakes are relatively common, and a significant swarm was experienced there last year as well. Researchers say that it has shown little indication that it will build towards a larger event, such as a volcanic eruption that destroyed the Yellowstone region tens of thousands of years ago. Scientists say that the current Yellowstone swarm does at least bear close observation due to its volume. Tropical Storm Oli Kicking Up Waves In South Pacific Tropical Storm Oli is headed between the islands of Bora Bora and Raratonga in the South Pacific, while maintaining its intensity as a tropical storm. Infrared satellite data from NASA's Aqua satellite reveals that Oli is a large storm, so those islands will experience gusty winds, some moderate to heavy rainfall, and heavy swells along their coasts. The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite flew over Oli on February 2 at 0041 UTC (Feb. 1 at 7:41 p.m. ET) and captured its extensive area of cloud cover. AIRS measured the temperatures of the clouds and found a large area of high thunderstorm cloud tops around the storm's center, as cold as minus 63 Fahrenheit. Those high, cold cloud tops indicate strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. NASA satellite sees Tropical Storm Fami form, fast and furious NASA's Aqua satellite caught the thirteenth tropical cyclone in the southern Indian Ocean form very quickly. In 12 hours a low grew into a tropical storm named Fami and made a fast landfall in Madagascar around 1 a.m. ET (0600 UTC) today, February 2. At 1 a.m. ET (0600 UTC), Tropical Storm Fami had maximum sustained winds near 46 mph (40 knots) and was located in southern Madagascar, about 235 nautical miles west-southwest of Antananarivo, Madagascar. That's near 21.2 South and 43.8 East. Fami is moving east-southeast near 9 mph (8 knots). The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite has the capability to create visible, infrared and microwave images of tropical cyclones. AIRS infrared and microwave images both showed very high, powerful thunderstorms in Fami, even now that it has made landfall. A microwave image was created combining AIRS and Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) data. AMSU is another instrument that flies on NASA's Aqua satellite. Israel Makes Waves by Simulating an Earthquake (IsraelNN.com) The Seismologic Division of the Ministry of National Infrastructure's Geophysical Institute will attempt to simulate an earthquake in the southern Negev on Thursday. The experiment, financed by the U.S. Defense Department, is a joint project with the University of Hawaii and is part of a scientific project intended to improve seismological and acoustic readings in Israel and its environs, up to a 1,000 km/621 mile radius. The experiment intends to improve the understanding of sound waves in the atmosphere. Scientists will then be able to fine-tune Israel’s seismological equipment to give advance warning of earthquakes. Measurements will also be taken in other countries, including Cyprus, Greece, France, and Germany. Israel will create a controlled explosion of 80 tons of explosive material, which will simulate the intensity of a tremor after an earthquake of Magnitude 3. Natural earthquakes of a similar intensity occur in the Middle East region about once a week, without the public feeling them.
