Venus did so last week, while both the Sun and Mars will do so August 13-17. After that, we head back into the minefield of the Saturn-Uranus opposition, which happens five times between November 4, 2008 and July 26, 2010. The third of the five passages of this 45-year cycle will unfold on September 15, with the new moon hitting that opposition just three days later.”

Earthquakes & Earth Changes Featured on Coast to Coast AM preceding Wednesday's Lunar Eclipse
Author and researcher Mitch Battros talked about earthquakes and earth changes. The recent series of quakes off Mexico that were felt in Phoenix and San Diego could be a precursor to a larger event, he said. He expects a big quake somewhere along the Cascadia subduction zone which runs from Northern California to Alaska, as well as possible seismic activity in the Puerto Rico Trench, which could cause tsunamis along the East Coast. A large quake in the Cascadia zone could set off new faults or a chain reaction triggering activity in locations as far away as the New Madrid Fault, he commented.
Battros said he tracks the sun and Moon in making quake predictions, and earth change analysis. While Solar Cycle 24 has been very quiet, he expects activity to pick up and actually be stronger than Cycle 23 at times, with short but powerful X Class flares hitting during 2011-2012. An advocate for disaster preparedness, he's set up this page with survival tips.

Breakthrough in Precursor Studies Key to Earthquake Prediction
.
For decades, seismologists have dreamed of being able to divine the time and place of the next disastrous shock. But the behavior of quake-prone faults has proved so complex that the experts have been forced to conclude that large tremors are isolated, random and unpredictable.
Industrially advanced countries have made commendable progress over the past several decades in earth sciences, but the prediction of the time, epicenter and magnitude of major earthquakes is a problem that has not been solved.

Seismic Boom: Breaking The Quake Barrier
THE convoy was more than 30 kilometres from the Kunlun fault in Tibet when the jeeps suddenly lurched. They had hit a series of parallel cracks, remnants of a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the year before. "It was like driving on steps," recalls Yann Klinger, a geologist from the Paris Institute of Geophysics in France.
The cracks were clear signs that the ground had been squeezed like a sponge then released, violently wrenching it apart. Yet they were much too far from the fault line to be explained by the quake. Mystified, the team took some measurements and moved on.

The Perseids Showers are Coming
July 31, 2009: Earth is entering a stream of dusty debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, the source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Although the shower won't peak until August 11th and 12th, the show is already getting underway.
For sky watchers in North America, the watch begins after nightfall on August 11th and continues until sunrise on the 12th. Veteran observers suggest the following strategy: Unfold a blanket on a flat patch of ground. (Note: The middle of your street is not a good choice.) Lie down and look up. Perseids can appear in any part of the sky, their tails all pointing back to the shower's radiant in the constellation Perseus. Get away from city lights if you can.

More earthquake faults discovered at the Salton Sea
By bouncing sound waves off the floor of the Salton Sea, researchers have discovered more than a dozen previously unknown earthquake faults, leading to a new theory of how the ground is sinking and stretching near the infamous San Andreas fault.
Danny Brothers, lead author of a study published Sunday, said the new understanding of the area's seismic mechanics does not appear to suggest that a massive quake on the San Andreas is more imminent than previously believed. Earthquake scientists have been interested in the region, about 140 miles east of Los Angeles, because the southernmost end of the San Andreas disappears at the banks of the Salton Sea.

Did an Ancient Volcano Freeze Earth?
One fine day about 74,000 years ago, a giant volcano on Sumatra blew its top. The volcano, named Toba, may have ejected 1000 times more rock and other material than Mount St. Helens in Washington state did in 1980. In the process, it cooled the climate by at least 10°C, causing a global famine. But could the aftermath have been even worse? A new study puts to rest questions about whether Toba plunged Earth into a 1000-year deep freeze and whether an equivalent event today could jump-start a new, millennia-long ice age.
Giant volcanic eruptions such as Toba briefly cause the opposite of global warming. Although eruptions do emit greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, volcanoes also spew sulfur dioxide. Combined with water vapor, sulfur dioxide forms sulfate aerosols, which can spread around the globe, blocking solar radiation and chilling the air before becoming acid rain and snow.
