The number of takedown orders received by Google from authorities based in the United States rose dramatically over the past year, with demands to remove information, including videos containing “government criticism,” increasing by 70 per cent.
“In the US, Google received 757 takedown requests across its sites and services, up 70 per cent from the second half of last year,” reports technology website V3.co.uk.
“US authorities also called for the removal of 113 videos from YouTube, including several documenting alleged police brutality which Google refused to take down.”
The figures are revealed in Google’s newly released transparency report, which also details how the number of “user data requests” by US authorities increased by 29 per cent compared to the last reporting period

After waiting out stormy weather and rough seas, a team of astronauts successfully began a tough mission Thursday, but instead of launching into space, this crew is headed for the ocean floor on a mock asteroid trip.
The six "aquanauts" splashed down at 2:15 p.m. EDT (1815 GMT) and will spend the next 13 days living inside a small laboratory called Aquarius on the ocean floor during their undersea mission to test different ways to explore an asteroid. The expedition was originally scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 17, but heavy rain and storms in the area made the waters unsafe for the dive, NASA officials said.
This is NASA's 15th NEEMO (NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations) voyage to test technology and innovative engineering solutions for future space missions. Thailand calls holiday to allow escape from floods (Reuters) - Thailand announced a five-day holiday on Tuesday to give people the chance to escape floods closing in on Bangkok as authorities ordered the evacuation of a housing estate on the outskirts of the city after a protective wall gave way.
The cabinet declared October 27-31 a holiday in Bangkok and 20 provinces affected by the country's worst flooding in 50 years as weekend high tides in the Gulf of Thailand could complicate efforts to divert water away from the low-lying capital.
The floods have forced the closure of seven industrial estates in Ayutthaya, Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani provinces bordering Bangkok, causing billions of dollars of damage, disrupting supply chains for industry and putting about 650,000 people temporarily out of work.

Divide and Rule: Sharia Law Comes to Libya The Libyan branch of al-Qaeda has announced its plan for Islamic Sharia law.
On Sunday, the Telegraph reported that Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, the chairman of NATO’s National Transitional Council, made the announcement.
Abdul-Jalil is from the Harabi tribe in eastern Libya. Harabi is connected to the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG ) and al-Qaeda. The LIFG is now known as the Islamic Movement for Change and has vowed to turn Libya into an Islamic state.
“We are an Islamic state,” said Jalil.
“Mr. Abdul-Jalil’s decision — made in advance of the introduction of any democratic process — will please the Islamists who have played a strong role in opposition to Col Gaddafi’s rule and in the uprising but worry the many young liberal Libyans who, while usually observant Muslims, take their political cues from the West,” reports the newspaper.
In August, Ali Aujali, the former Libyan Ambassador to the United States who renounced leader Muammar Gaddafi to support NATO’s al-Qaeda rebels, said Libya would not become an Islamic state. “As for the talk that Libya will become an Islamic state, this is the talk that Gaddafi used to say,” Aujali said in an interview with Reuters. “There is no room for extremism in Libya.”

A major document from the Vatican's Justice and Peace department should be music to the ears of the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrators and similar movements around the world who have protested against the economic downturn.
The 18-page document, "Towards Reforming the International Financial and Monetary Systems in the Context of a Global Public Authority," was at times very specific, calling, for example, for taxation measures on financial transactions.
"The economic and financial crisis which the world is going through calls everyone, individuals and peoples, to examine in depth the principles and the cultural and moral values at the basis of social coexistence," it said.

Thousands of dead birds wash ashore at Wasaga Beach Thousands of dead birds have flooded the shores of Georgian Bay in a scene that locals compared to the devastation from an oil spill.
Dead loons, ducks and seagulls covered “every foot” of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park’s shorelines on Saturday, said local Faye Ego, who walks her dog there daily.
“It’s like when you see the oil slicks,” Ego said. “It turns your stomach. It’s awful.”
Between 5,000 and 6,000 dead waterfowl are scattered along a 3-kilometre stretch near Wasaga Beach, said Ontario Provincial Police Const. Peter Leon.
Botulism appears to be the culprit behind the masses of dead birds based on information from the Ministry of Natural Resources, police said.
The deadly disease is caused by toxins that lake-bottom bacteria produce under certain conditions. Fish were likely infected, then died and floated to the surface.

Two signs on fire at San Jose State University called 'intentional' State fire investigators and campus police are looking into who set two signs ablaze inside a classroom building at San Jose State University early Thursday, according the San Jose Fire Department.
Capt. Mary Gutierrez called the fires, first reported by students at 7:30 a.m. from the Dudley Moorhead Hall, "intentional sets."
"Billboards don't just catch on fire themselves," she said.
No one was injured, but Gutierrez said 150 students were temporarily evacuated from the social sciences building.
Students on their way to class called 911 to report the fires. One sign, which had the words "Enter Disciplinary Social Sciences,'' still left on it, was found burnt in a stairwell between the first and second floors inside the building, Gutierrez said. That fire was put out by students.
The second sign "self-extinguished" as it was hung up on concrete inside the building on the second floor, Gutierrez said.
The fire caused just about $200 in damage and the building is open for class

The article claims that protesters throughout the US movement have cited (ironically) protests in Cairo as their "inspiration" to rise up against corruption in their government and financial institutions.

Tanker truck fire closes all southbound lanes of 101 in San Francisco The California Highway Patrol has closed all lanes of southbound 101 in San Francisco after a big-rig overturned and caught fire near the transition ramp to Interstate 80, according to Officer Peter Van Eckhardt.
The CHP first received reports of the overturned big-rig just after 5 a.m., Van Eckhardt said. San Francisco firefighters extinguished the blaze, which was contained to the cab portion of the big rig.
The truck's driver was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. Van Eckhardt said the driver was "alert and responsive" but complained of pain in several locations.
The overturned big-rig also took out a large portion of guardrail that was knocked loose and fell onto city streets below, Van Eckhardt said. Caltrans will have to repart the railing before opening all lanes of traffic.

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (The Blaze/AP) — Schools closed and motorists were warned to stay in their vehicles as officers with assault rifles patrolled a rural area in eastern Ohio Wednesday, a day after police killed dozens of escaped animals from a wild-animal preserve, where the owner was found dead.
As authorities warned that more animals still were on the loose, three school districts in the region and some private and special schools canceled classes as the remaining bears, big cats and other beasts from the Muskingum County Animal Farm were hunted down.
Flashing signs along area highways told motorists, “Caution exotic animals” and “Stay in vehicle.”
Authorities wouldn‘t say how the farm’s owner Terry Thompson died, but said it wasn’t suspicious.* However, several aggressive animals were near his body when deputies arrived and had to be shot. Thompson, who lived on the property, had orangutans and chimps in his home, but those were still in their cages.
The bizarre situation unfolded due to the fact that the animals‘ cages had been opened and the farm’s fences had been left unsecured, police said. A sheriff says new, overnight animal sightings have not been confirmed in rural eastern Ohio, where police have killed dozens of the escaped animals.

Drug-Resistant Staph Infections in Europe Could Mark Start of a New Epidemic FLAGSTAFF, Arizona—A relatively new type of drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus could represent the world’s next bacterial epidemic, an environmental health expert said here today at a conference for science writers.
The superbug, called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain 398, or MRSA ST398, was first identified in an infant in the Netherlands in 1994 and traced back to her family’s pigs. Now, researchers are starting to see more serious infections and some of the cases reveal no direct link to livestock, said Lance B. Price, director of the Center for Microbiomics and Human Health at The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), in Flagstaff.
“The rate of human [ST398] infections is going up in Denmark and the Netherlands,” Price said. “We are just looking at the beginning of an epidemic.” Price made his comments during a presentation at the 49th annual New Horizons in Science meeting, organized by the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing.
The mechanism for transmission in these newer ST398 cases currently is unknown. Researchers are considering various explanations including human-to-human exposure, contaminated meat or changes in the organism that make it spread more easily, Price said. Already, ST398 was recently found in about half of the pigs and farmers tested in Iowa.
