Review of May and Natural Disasters

May was a month few will never to forget as earth, air, water and even fire unleashed giant calamities. By the time the first New Moon in Taurus had arrived on May 5th also known as a Super Moon (within 90 percent of its closest approach to earth) Cyclone Nargis had destroyed the country formerly known as Burma. Nargis with winds up to 121 miles moved across southern Myanmar on the evening of Friday, May 2. So far the catastrophic destruction has resulted in at least 90,000 fatalities with a further 56,000 people still missing. At that time, turbo-charged Neptune (Oceans)-North Node (destiny) and Chiron (wounds that need healing) came together in the sign of high clouds and extreme weather: Aquarius quincunx Mars in wet watery Cancer. Note that Mercury is one of the primary weather predictors for astrometeorology. On the day of the cyclone Mercury ingressed into Gemini just 7 hours before Saturn stationed direct at 8:07 PM PDT and the exact SQ occurred the next day as both these mutable signs triggered fatal results.

Then just ten days after Nargis, the earth began shaking in Sichuan province China, registering a 7.9 Magnitude tremor. The aftershocks are still coming with a death toll of 68,500 and it is sure to rise with nearly 20,000 missing. On that lethal day, when the earth opened up in wrath, the Sun-Venus in Taurus was TSQ the Aquarian triumvirate Chiron-Neptune-N Node and Moon-S Node in Leo unleashing incredible power.

Mutability Prevails in June

The new Moon was on June 3rd in Mercury ruled Gemini. For those looking for deeper symbolism simply has to go to the Tarot. The Lovers card is attributed to Gemini and the Hebrew letter Zain, which means sword – as in discrimination, or aka, "disposing intelligence." In the book, The Tarot by Paul Foster Case, we're given a clue: "the relationship between the self-consciousness and subconsciousness should be one of loving intimacy." This is a month when it’s necessary to have the two phases of personality on speaking terms and in harmony. As powerful as the fixed signs were in May, the volatility of the mutable energies will be a rival. The effect of the mutable, or common signs, grappling with the uncontrollable forces of outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto in June will be extreme.

Outer Planets and Uranus-Their Effect

Three days after the Sagittarius Full Moon, Uranus will station retrograde. Uranus harbinger of quakes, hurricanes and tornadoes will continue backwards, applying to a SQ with the US Sibley chart's Mars @ 21 Gemini. Undoubtedly, the preceding conflict will add even more calamities and disruption; unconventional events will continue to shape the collective and expose corruption along with the inequalities of society. The weird, bizarre and even the purported contact with ET's will make world news. More than ever the passage of Mercury's discrimination and analysis is needed.

Deeper into the Hermes Myth

A great realignment involving communication, transportation, local communities, and a resurgent inner spirituality began last May 26th. At this time Mercury moved retrograde less then an hour before Neptune stationed. In Greek myth, Hermes was the messenger, the trickster, associated with merchants and patron of roads and boundaries. He rules the two signs, Gemini and Virgo. For full integration, Gemini needs to move from the specific to the general and Virgo from the concrete fact to the larger picture. Hermes was a traveler in all three worlds and the son of Zeus and the nymph Maia. He moved from the lofty realms of Olympus to guide us mortals in the mundane realm, and then it was his duty to guide our souls to the underworld. This later role, which he shared with Charon, is known as a psychopomp or the literal meaning, the "guide of souls". The psychopomp role is not to judge the deceased, but simply provide safe passage. From Jung's work, this is the mediator between the unconscious and conscious realms and can also be attributed to the shadowy Saturn, which is now in Virgo, and to Chiron, which shares rulership with Virgo and Sagittarius.

The Child Within and Without

Sun, Mercury, Venus and Saturn in youth oriented signs, defined by the child/adolescent, and Mars in Leo, expect this month's news to feature stories about children. A primary example is the children who were removed from the polygamist sect in Texas. A recent ruling (conducted with Mercury retrograde) states that those young children, who were taken away by authorities (Saturn), should now be returned. In relationship to Mercury we find the psychological side of the adult with the Peter Pan complex, or as Carl Jung called the archetype puer aeternus/ puella aeterna. Jungian analyst Marie-Louise von Franz made this famous with her book Puer Aeternus: A Psychological Study of the Adult Struggle With the Paradise of Childhood. On the opposite end of the spectrum – especially with Jupiter now retrograde till September – the archetype of the wise old man, or Senex, is highly relevant. Here we are talking about an older father-type figure, who helps others by recounting stories and offering guidance in a mystical way. It is obvious that the US, as a country, needs to grow up fast and take on more responsibility (with its own Mars in Gemini SQ Neptune in Virgo). Hopefully the citizens and voters won't perceive McCain as the "wise old man" and can see that he has his own adolescent fantasies.

Words Have Power to Create Change

The Gemini search for variety is highly motivating this month, as we become heavily invested in the realm of words, books and literary deeds. A recent example is Scott McClellan's new blockbuster "What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception." McClellan was the second of Bush's four press secretaries and first of Bush's Austin-based inner circle. He had a change of heart concerning his adulation of his former boss just as Venus/Gemini SQ Saturn/Virgo. This relates well to the rejection of the Bush Administration’s cold, heartless behavior. Scott McClellan (born 2-14-1968) with Jupiter in Virgo was a direct recipient of this transit as his ethical motives were honed. GWB's own North Node and Uranus in 19 and 20 degrees of Gemini are feeling the power of Mercury to create swift change via messages.

Gemini, Mercury and Finding Solutions

Gemini relates to the mind and it's moods of dark and light duality like no other sign. In June be prepared for a high incidence of nervous energy, mental problems and respiratory illness this month especially with Chiron together with the Dragon's tail and Neptune. On a highly positive note a strong favoring of intellectual pursuits will dominate. A lesson that can be learned from mutable signs will find the path of least resistance. With the cost of oil skyrocketing, the creativity of mutable Gemini and the practicality of Virgo will begin to yield solutions for the next few years. Hopefully as Uranus moves retrograde in Pisces, we may see some easing of gasoline prices. At any rate the emphasis on third house planets will encourage a focus on our immediate boundaries, which could relate to less driving. A strong practical need within us all to gather empirical data will be stimulated in June. Mercury's retrograde period ending June 19th will keep us within the orb of a SQ to Uranus (higher octave of Mercury). We can expect remarkable scientific breakthroughs along with periods of glitches. Many of these technical malfunctions, especially with computer networks and the internet, will last longer than usual. It won't just be the mutable signs that add to train wrecks in June since Mars is in super dramatic Leo. Assertive Mars is also applying to an exact opposition with Neptune on June 21st. This may mean that ideology and beliefs are seemingly more important than reality. This opposition will reflect such news as the recent explicit decree issued by the Vatican. A decree against the ordination of women priests demands punishment of automatic excommunication to the priests and those bishops who try to ordain them!

Importance of Venus Approaching the Full Moon in Sagittarius

Venus, the esoteric ruler of Gemini, and the planet, which is said to bring together the dualistic and restless Mercurial mind, plays a huge part in the Full Moon of June. Relationships of all kinds, even same sex unions are now prominent, especially after California’s May 15th ruling overturning the state's ban on gay marriage. And on that date, Venus was sextile Uranus, adding to more progressive social mores. The Greek myths tell of how Hermes and Aphrodite were lovers while Vulcan was away. This relationship was a grounding process as Air and Earth got together. The thinking Gemini Hermes via the erotic feeling Aphrodite resulted in stability. Right before the Full Moon on June 18th, Venus opposes Pluto. Pluto has recently moved backwards into Sagittarius, adding an obsessive emotional energy. The chart set for Washington DC has the Moon-Pluto opposition to Sun-Venus on the IC /MC putting the implications of gay marriage in the national spotlight. Set for San Francisco at 10:31 AM, June 18th has Mars-Leo on the ascendant. This coincides with gender-neutral marriage certificates being issued in California on June 17. This opposition is part of a more emotional ingress of Venus into Cancer. This will add a psychic quality and a nurturing feeling, since Ceres is in Cancer, too. Is America ready to let go of hard fought battles, even though the younger evangelicals are now more accepting of gays and lesbians? Also the Vatican decree against ordination of women priests will be severely tested this month as all women's issues are on the forefront.
