The Event
Mercury which has been retrograde since April 26th will pass between Earth and the Sun on May 7, 2003 in a rare astronomic event that occurs only a dozen times in a century. We will be treated or maybe a better word is "subjected" to both an astronomical and astrological event on the morning of May 7th 2003.

A little background:
Only two planets can undergo transits of the Sun: Mercury and Venus. These events are exceptionally rare but no longer have the scientific importance they had in centuries past. Well that doesn't apply to astrological significance, which sometimes catalyzes events (like time released chemical reactions) that can occur days, weeks or years in advance. In 2003 and 2004 both planets will undergo transits that are potentially observable from the UK.and East Coast of US

Transits: More Background
Mercury orbits the Sun inside the orbit of the Earth so there are occasions when the planet is between us and the Sun. These events - called inferior conjunctions - happen every 116 days on average. However, the alignment is rarely exact because Mercury's orbit is inclined to ours by some 7º. Usually, Mercury appears to pass above or below the Sun at inferior conjunction. A similar geometrical arrangement in the Earth-Moon system prevents solar eclipses every month.
Transits of Mercury can only take place in that very narrow range of dates.
Typically, there are around a dozen transits of Mercury per century, of which half may be visible from a particular location (the Sun being below the horizon for the rest). Combine this with local weather conditions and you can begin to see how rare these events are!
The last transit of Mercury that was potentially visible in the UK took place on November 10th, 1973. After 2003, the next will not be seen until May 9th, 2016.

So what's the big deal?
In this particular transit we have both Sun and Mercury at 16°Taurus conjunct Black Hole Eurydice. Alex Miller-Mignone wrote the Black Hole Book and brought the concept of black holes into astrological prominence from the exclusive realm of science. Alex uses the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice as a primary metaphor for a this type of transformation. In the myth of the Orpheus/Eurydice saga, Orpheus was given a dispensation by Pluto to return his wife from the underworld (she had been bitten by a poisonous serpent and died). Upon flight from the Underworld, Orpheus was told to never look back not even once at his bride, Eurydice who was following. The myth states that almost into the light, a few steps from the entrance to the world of the living, Orpheus saw Eurydice fade away into the blackness of the pit!
This image of descent and return perfectly captures the way a black hole functions. Eurydice is positioned at 16°Taurus just one degree beyond the light of the Beltane Power Gate at 15 °Taurus. Eurydice maintains a powerful ability to interact with the world of light she left behind.

Eurydice has been known to intervene in dramatic fashion like the Nov 8th election on 1994 when she opposed the Scorpio Sun to rebalance the Congress from a solid Democratic majority into a Republican stronghold. She has also figured in the chart of the US Civil War (Moon conjunct at 15 °Taurus and square Jupiter at 17°Aquarius). Eurydice will now add to the powers of the Mercury Trickster on May 7th.

The Chart and the Power Plays
With Mercury literally in the "In the heart of the Sun" or as it is known a Cazimi aspect (traditionally a Cazimi planet is fortified). I decided to create this chart for the heart of political power - Washington DC. This Mercury Transit chart for Washington DC has Mercury and Sun conjunct Eurydice in the Second House of Values and Money opposing Juno in the 8th at 11° Scorpio (representing partnerships that foster control and jealousy). Juno in the 8th house may represent a power struggle within the administration over money (story just broke on May 6th on how: WASHINGTON (CNN) -- About $1 billion was taken from Iraq's Central Bank by Saddam Hussein and his family, just hours before the United States began bombing Iraq, We may find yet that a deal was brokered by the Bush Cartel with Saddam allowing him to keep his money and life if he played along with the occupation. Venus as the covetous Aries Warrior (ruler of the Taurean Sun) is completing the rape of the IRAQI resources. We should all thank Alex Miller-Mignone who revealed the connection to "Operation Iraqi Freedom." and the conjunction of Pluto 19° to Black Hole Ereshkigal the half of a sister of Innana (17/18° Sagittarius). Retrograde Pluto will finally station and go direct at 17° Sag.
Update for May 7th shows how Dick Cheney's old company Haliburton has an even larger contract in Iraq. Notice that Cheney has Mars at 17Sag. quincux (150 degrees) from Black Hole Eurydice and conjunct Pluto. He also has Jupter 7°/Saturn 8° conjunct in Taurus in ninth house of foreign lands a fortunate conjunction indeed! The Story:

Are there any possibilites that this Mercury Transit will precipitate political violence?
Mars in Aquarius will soon to be exactly conjunct Neptune on May 14th. Mars in Aquarius is always the revolutionary and reformer who works toward democracy. Unfortunately, according to some astrologers Mars in this Jupiter-Neptune zone will surely inspire major acts of terrorism. As Jupiter and Neptune move toward oppostion on June 2nd the mix of strong idealisim and religious zeal may inspire the suicide bombers who want to get back at America for their current Middle Eastern occupations.

Mercury will first play out his trickster role in the area of communications and media.
With this close passage of Mercury RX to Sun 16° Taurus we will also see communications and computer glitches abound. We may see satellite transmissions interupted. Chances are that our trading floors at NYSE and NASDAQ will experience a trading program gone wild or at the least server downtime.
