SABAH by John K. Terwilliger

a god rises in the east
omnipotent
as though it were the sun

smoke from fires boiling morning tea
splayed thin annoying the ether
above the mud hovels vain all plastered and peeled

heat rises from the street
to burn the eyes and choke the throat
and crooked sapian coaxes dust from corners & cracks
with pieces of straw
brittle & bleached

whore from her cubicle
smelling of lemon peels
squats in her garden
expelling nights seed
